In 1842 Thomas Davis, Charles Gavin Duffy and John Blake Dillon founded The Nation newspaper. It was Davis who proposed the paper to be called The Nation and he became its most inspiring writer of patriotic prose and poetry attracting a readership of over a quarter of a million shortly after its first publication in 1842. Mallow Development Partnership Heritage sub-group will in 2014 erect a status to the famous Mallow man Thomas Davis on the occasion of the bi-centenary of his birth in the town in 1814. The status is a bronze copy of Hogan's famous status of Davis presently located in the Rotunda in the City Hall in Dublin.
