It was Davis who proposed the paper to be called The Nation and he became its most inspiring writer of patriotic prose and poetry attracting a readership of over a quarter of a million shortly after its first publication in 1842. Mallow Development Partnership Heritage sub-group will in 2014 erect a status to the famous Mallow man Thomas Davis on the occasion of the bi-centenary of his birth in the town in 1814. The status is a bronze copy of Hogan's famous status of Davis presently located in the Rotunda in the City Hall in Dublin.
