Girls Schools Rugby programme is up and running!

Female sport in Ireland has witnessed phenomenal growth in recent times, with all the associated benefits of physical exercise and participation in team sports. In rugby, Munster are the reigning interprovincial women’s champions, and this has heightened the level of interest in the sport among girls throughout Munster.

A new innovative rugby programme for girls, supported and sponsored by McDonald’s Mallow, is helping deliver fun rugby sessions over the course of the 2022/2023 school year in the Convent Primary School Mallow and St. Mary's Secondary School in Mallow.

As Aislinn Ronayne of McDonald’s Mallow stated: “The Girls Schools Rugby Programme provides an opportunity for girls to learn about rugby, develop skills, have fun, and get a good 'run around' for their physical and mental wellbeing”.

The programme, which is supported by Munster Rugby, provides regular and frequent coaching sessions for girls aged 6 to 16 in the Convent Primary School Mallow and St. Mary’s Secondary School. Sessions are delivered by a Club and Community Coach from Munster Rugby, assisted by local volunteers. Coaches ensure that all the girls learn skills and participate in non-contact and contact games in a safe environment based on individual girls’ abilities.

”We’re delighted to have rugby as part of the Convent’s P.E. programme for this school year and appreciate McDonald’s support which enables our pupils to play rugby and learn about teamwork” stated Jennifer O’Farrell, Deputy Principal, Convent Primary School Mallow.
